A Brief Interlude
A blue, cloudless sky stretched
endlessly over a field
of grass. The wind teased the blades ever
so
slightly, making them sway and ripple like waves.
This went on for
miles…far as the eye could see,
broken only by the occasional tree. Laughter
broke
the silence, floating melodiously over the open
plains. It startled
the birds from a nearby tree,
which flew upwards until they're no more than
spots in
the sun.
//Sanctuary….there aren't many of these left. The
war
has destroyed most of the fields….turned into camps or
bases or battle
fields, the charred remanence of
something once beautiful abandoned to fend
off the
world on its own. When you fly over the planet, you
can see them.
They dot the hillsides; most have been
disturbed. This one hasn't. A refuge
of forgotten
beauty- protected by snow capped sentinels of earth
and
stone. I'm glad we found it. I haven't felt true
peace in a long time.

Duo Maxwell stretched, rising from his post under a
tree. He took
off running and tripped, falling and
rolling down a hill. He laughed the
entire time,
wanting nothing more than the simplicity he was
surrounded
by. When he finally stood, he brushed
himself off and started running again.
His
destination was another shade tree about one hundred
feet from the
base of the hill he'd formerly occupied.
He got there without even becoming
winded- it having
only taken him a few seconds. "May I sit
down?"
Heero looked up at the braided figure that was stand
above him.
He pushed him up into a sitting position
and nodded. Duo flopped down on the
now vacant spot
next to his partner. They sat there in silence,
just
taking in the stillness around them, until the sun
set; changing the
blue to an assortment of purples,
pinks, yellows, and oranges, before going
the a deep
indigo that was night.
"We'd better head back," Heero said
softly. He stood
and stretched before holding out a hand to the
figure
still sprawled gracefully on the ground next to him.
It was
accepted gratefully. Duo pulled himself up,
stretching also. He put an arm
around Heero's waist,
which was done in kind back, and smiled
contentedly.
They walked back to the safe house like that, kept
company by
the other and the stars.
