Heero shifted for the up-teenth time. He simply could *not* get used to the uniform skirt
he was currently wearing, no matter how hard he tried.
Keeping his eyes focused ahead, he waited as the secretary finally found their file, after
about ten minutes of searching, and copied the schedules and school maps for himself
and Wufei. Wufei appeared to be in his element, as odd as that was. With the right
amount of padding *here* and the right amount of baggy clothes *there*, Wufei nearly
did look like a girl. It also helped that his hair was down and finding it's way into his
face, something nearly every girl complained about. Heero did have that length, and here
it worked to a disadvantage.
"All right, ladies, here are you schedules and a map for each of you. You'll both be
staying in Unicorn Hall, and your roommates will be with you shortly. Classes are nearly
over for today."
The secretary sat down as Heero yet again tried to figure out why every hall was named
after a mythological creature if this was an all-girl catholic boarding school. Didn't they
think that those creatures were the work of the devil or something?
"Thank you," Wufei mumbled, and Heero followed him to their hall, parting with him
shortly after reaching it for his own room, with out so much as acknowledging the other.
Finding his room, he entered, finding it to be a double room, as the secretary had
mentioned. Not knowing who his roommate was, he checked outside the window for a
way out if he needed it, found the school laptop on his bed, and checked for anything that
could possibly be used as a weapon that was not his.
Not long after searching the small bathroom that he now shared, and would probably
need to make good use of to hide his gender, his roommate walked in.
"Hey there," the blue-haired girl greeted. "You must be Usagi. My name's Sammy, short
for Samantha." Sammy held out her hand, and Heero reluctantly shook it. It was odd
enough that she had blue hair, but from the looks of it, it was *almost* the natural color.
The girl was thin, looking like she hadn't eaten in days, and was considerably tall.
"It's good to have a roommate again. My last roommate just transferred to Highgrounds,
so I was alone there for a while. That's why the room's so neat. I didn't have anything to
do or anyone to talk to, so I spent my time cleaning up my messes. Normally it's pretty
much organized chaos. I hope you don't mind..."
"I don't mind," Heero said simply.
"That's good. If you ever need anything, or even just to talk, you can come to me, or any
of the other girls in this hall, we're all pretty open. But stay away from Dragon Hall. That
bunch are a lot of stuck-up snobs. Think 'cause they got the fire-breathing creature for
their hall that they're better. Hah! Not likely! We show them up any day! Right?" Heero
simply stared at her as if he was confused. "Not much of a conversationalist, are you?"
Heero simply shrugged and sat down on his bed, mindful of his skirt.
"Well, dinner is served in an hour. Most of us just head down in our pjs or whatever
'cause we don't have classes. That's what I like about this school, work time is uniform
time and every other time is sleep time. We like being comfy here."
"You like to sleep so much?"
"Oh yeah. That and eat. We thrive on food. The café is open 24/7, but only serves real
meals at 7 am, 12 noon, and 8 pm. Other than that you can only get snacks. Works for the
rest of us though. And if your family's close enough you can visit on weekends. Where ya
from?" Sammy asked as, true to her word of being 'comfy' she began to strip. Heero
pointedly averted his gaze.
"Earth," he mumbled.
"Oh, that's too bad. My family's about three hours drive out from here. Maybe you'd like
to come with me some time?" Sammy began to dress in sweat pants and a really baggy
tee, and Heero felt safe enough to turn around again.
/If I refuse, I'll look suspicious.../ "Well, I'll have to check with my sister..."
"Meiran, right? No problem, but if she gives ya any trouble, you just let me know, ok?"
Heero nodded.
Noticing Heero was still in his uniform, Sammy asked, "Aren't you going to change?"
"Well...I didn't really bring anything to wear besides my uniform and nightshirt, so...I
think I'll just wear this," Heero explained, trying not to sound worried.
"Well that won't do! Let's see, you're a tad bit smaller than me for the legs, but the shirt
should fit perfect, or at least, the way it was meant to. I hope you don't mind baggy
pants?" Heero shook his head. "Good. Lessee...um, these are the only clean pants I have,"
she said, tossing him a pair of sweatpants that read 'Saint Mary's' down one leg and
'Paws off' across the butt. She pulled out two shirts and held them up for Heero to look at,
asking "Which one?"
Heero silently chose the 'I rule everything' shirt over the one that declared 'I rule Hell on
my days off - don't tell my parents.'
This definitely ranked up there in the weird category. Thankfully, though, he thought it
would be fairly easy to sneak some spare time around with this girl as vibrant as she was.
He didn't think that she'd notice too much.
"So aren't you going to change? We have to leave soon if we wanna get there before the
line gets too long."
"Um, why don't you go on ahead while I change and I'll catch up to you in a few," Heero
considered.
"Ok, I'll save ya a spot. Just look for the girls in the black and gold shirts, that's my
crowd. We aren't morbid or anything like that, though. We're writers. It helps our creative
juices flow." That was good, it was an excuse to be on the laptop for hours with no real
homework to complete. Sammy bounced out the door quickly. Calling out "See ya!" as
she shut the door.
Heero sighed as he booted up the laptop and went into the bathroom to change. With so
open a girl, it was also going to be hard to hide the fact that he was a guy from her. He
hoped that Wufei was having better luck.
********
"Hey there Sammy!" a girl called as Sammy bounced into the café.
"Hey!" Sammy answered, making her way over to the group. "Look guys, I got a new
roommate and she's kinda shy so I need you guys to be nice to her, ok?"
"Sure thing," another girl replied. Just then Heero walked into the café.
"Hey! Usagi!" Sammy called. Heero made his way over to them. "Ok, Usagi, this is
Myna," she pointed to a red-haired girl who was slightly short, but looked to have some
training, "Terry," the next girl looked like a gymnast, and had long black hair to her mid-
back. Heero couldn't help but compare it's length to Duo's, which was considerably
longer. "Carrie," Sammy continued, pointing to a girl with short blond hair, that had
several blue highlights in it. She looked almost like Quatre, but Heero dismissed the
thought. The girl's - Carrie's - eyes were brown, and Quatre's were blue. "And last but not
least, the cutest of our little group, Kitty!" The girl growled at the 'cutest' remark, but
managed to smile for Heero. She truly did look like a cat, however, with the way her light
brown, almost blonde bangs framed her forehead and the shape of her face gave her a
feline air. She looked to be just about as lazy, too, though she was far from fat, she was
also far from thin. She looked to be the most healthy of all the girls he had met, most
others he had been sure he would have felt bone if he had been hugged, not that he
wanted to try the experience. "And guys, this is Usagi."
Most of the group rolled their eyes at her, and Heero managed a smirk.
********
Dinner had not gone as badly as he had thought. Though he had thought the outfit
strange, he had fit in perfectly, and Sammy had told him to keep the outfit. He had only
caught a glimpse of Wufei once, when he was talking to a strange girl with long chestnut
hair done up in pigtails. Her hair had been comparable to Duo's. He hadn't seen her hair
down, but he thought that it might be the same length, even, if not longer.
Now that Sammy was in the shower, he took the time to check up on the virus scan that
he had uploaded into the laptop. It was one of his own making, that also doubled as a
search for any tracers or controls that had been placed on the laptop, even ones so tiny as
internet history files. He had uploaded it to the internet for easy access when he didn't
have his laptop, and coded it so that if the wrong password was entered you *received* a
virus instead of *preventing* one. The search had finished not too long after he had left,
but he hadn't wanted to appear odd by not showing up at the proper time to eat,
considering what the other girl had said about food in this school.
Now certain that his laptop was clean, he began to hack into the school's databases. He
didn't care that they hadn't been in the school any longer than four hours, he felt this odd
need to get his work over with so that he could sort out his feelings and maybe talk to
someone, maybe Sammy, since he would never see her again. Something was pushing
him to *want* to talk, and he thought that it might have been humanity, though he had no
idea where that split personality had come from.
Perhaps it had been created as an escape from the war. He never thought about the war
anymore, but every time a mission went wrong for Preventors, he thought about it. He
dreamed about it. He had nightmares about it. He saw a little girl with her puppy, Duo,
beaten in a cell, himself after his attempts at self-distruction, and, as always, those
thoughts also brought with them the worry of ever truly belonging in this world of peace.
However none of these thoughts crossed Heero's mind as he typed furiously at his laptop,
making his way through the schools many files.
Not a one of them was large enough to purchase even the small parts needed for a doll.
Heero then checked out the local maps of the area, and discovered that nothing could be
built underground. The whole area was built on top of five layers of cement and steel,
which were protecting the buildings from the emissions from the weather control system
on the colony. He almost laughed at how simple it was.
That was one mission complete. He'd let Wufei work on it for a while before he
confessed his findings. It was better anyway in case his findings were wrong. Shutting
down the laptop, Heero slid it under his bed.
When Sammy walked out of the shower a few minutes later, he was asleep.
